Usually, Lewis Capaldi is the one who makes us cry with his heartbreaking lyrics! But this time he is the one crying, after eating spicy chicken wings with Sean Evans on the viral segment “Hot Ones.”

Capaldi answered questions about songwriting, imposter syndrome and his new music, all while eating extremely spicy chicken wings. While he started out strong, he was quickly humbled as the spice level went up.

He got teary-eyed because of the heat of the wings, but maybe because of the emotional nature of the discussion as well. He revealed that it took nearly a year to write “Someone You Loved” because of how painful it was:

“Songwriting for me, people say it’s like catharsis and all the rest, it’s a really beautiful thing but catharsis isn’t always comfortable or enjoyable,” he told Evans. “I spend most of my time hating myself when I write songs and yeah I think that’s fate, that’s my process.”

His new song and music video for “Wish You the Best” has been tending on TikTok as fans challenge each other to watch the video without tearing up. He said that he loves that it makes the fans cry:

“Yeah I enjoy it,” Capaldi confessed. “What’s nicest, I always wanted to be viral on TikTok, I never thought I would get there by traumatizing children but if that’s paying the bills then so be it.”
