Canada has a new $2 coin! The Royal Canadian Mint has launched a new toonie across the country on Tuesday (July 13), and there are colourful versions available.

The toonie celebrates 100 years since a Canadian breakthrough that changed the world forever.  “We are proud to unveil these $2 commemorative circulation coins celebrating the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, a Canadian medical breakthrough that continues to have a global impact,” Royal Canadian Mint’s Instagram page states.

Insulin was discovered by four researchers who collaborated back in 1921.  Narcity notes, “This is marked by the toonie’s design, which features scientific instruments, a maple leaf, blood cells and insulin molecules. The word “insulin” and the years “1921” and “2021” are also included.”
