Edmonton-born singer Kapri is this month’s One to Watch artist (learn more about her HERE), and her debut single, ‘Deeper’ has reached #1 on the Canadian Spotify Viral Chart.

In some recent interviews, she’s opened up about the making of the music video.

Kapri grew up with her Trinidadian mother who was heavy into Afro-Caribbean beats, but ‘Deeper’ has a very different, dance, house sound.

She explained why she went with that sound to Universal Music, “I’ve always had a love for the 90’s dance sound and what it could do to a person on the dance floor. It just moves you! So when producer Kill Them With Colour had played a 2 min loop of a beat, that was still in its raw stage, I knew immediately it had the potential to recreate those feelings. Writing to the loop was quite simple; old-school vibes inspired the melody and lyrics while modern touches were added to the production.”

‘Deeper’ has a very summer-vibe to it but it was released in late September. Kapri explained the timing of the song’s release, saying, “Timing is not something you can control but with this track I felt its release needed to be as close to summer as possible. The record is very bright musically and has a tropical-summertime feel to it. No matter what time of year I hear Deeper, I will always want to hold onto to that summer vibe.”

As a Torontonian, I immediately noticed that the video was filmed here in the 6ix (which is where Kapri now calls home). She was involved in the entire creative process of the making of the video and that was important for her as she told Canadian Beats, “I want to ensure I am a part of every aspect of the creative process. For the “Deeper” video, I chose my own looks and found a neighbourhood in Downtown Toronto that 100 percent represents who I am—a Carib-Canadian who’s linked to so many amazing scenes.”

Kapri wanted to make sure the visuals used in the video were representative of her own cultural background and Toronto’s, “Since deeper is such an upbeat record, I personally scouted a location to match – that was Market 707 (located at Dundas & Bathurst.) It is a vibrant neighborhood with vendors that represent different cultural communities, which was essential to me.”

Kapri also sat down with Genius to discuss the lyrics to ‘Deeper’ (you can check out the full story HERE), but I’ll let her explain the songs chorus:

Even though I’ve fallen for you
Even though this love ain’t brand-new
You’ll forever be my steady go-to
My love grows deeper, deeper, deeper

She told Genius, “Despite how tumultuous the relationship is, despite being already passed the honeymoon stage, as time goes on my feelings for you continue to get stronger. You’re the one I’ll always come back to.”
